Degree Pre-Requisites

NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS:

We are currently working to evaluate and improve our program. During this time, the M.S. in Kinesiology degree program will not be accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Please check back in the future for further updates.

Prerequisites For M.S. Candidates in Kinesiology

Candidates for admission to the M.S. Program in Kinesiology must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. Applicants with an undergraduate major in Kinesiology or closely related field are preferred. Graduate program applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 90 units of undergraduate work. Special attention is focused upon student performance in undergraduate science courses (anatomy, physiology, chemistry) as well as undergraduate kinesiology coursework (biomechanics, exercise physiology, muscle anatomy).

Applicants to the program who do not have an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and/or are deficient in the listed pre-requisites for graduate level courses will be required to successfully complete the deficient coursework before the Masters Degree can be conferred. This coursework can be completed while enrolled in the graduate program but must be taken in addition to the 45 units on the Formal Study Plan for the Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology.

Classified Graduate Standing

For admission to the program with classified graduate standing, the applicant must have an undergraduate degree in kinesiology or the equivalent academic preparation as determined by the Coordinator of the Kinesiology Graduate Program. Applicants with a grade point average below the required 3.0 and an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology may appeal to the graduate coordinator to be "conditionally" accepted. This procedure involves a review process and a specified contract to be successfully completed before admission to classified graduate standing. Special attention is focused upon student performance in undergraduate science and Kinesiology coursework for applicants with a GPA below 3.0 requesting to be conditionally accepted.

Conditionally Classified Graduate Standing

Applicants to the program without an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology or equivalent academic preparation may be admitted to the program with conditionally classified graduate standing. Applicants with undergraduate deficiencies must remove these deficiencies through coursework or examination before Advancement to Candidacy and may complete this coursework while enrolled as a graduate student at Cal Poly.

For Advancement to Candidacy a student shall have:

  • Successfully completed all conditionally classified requirements
  • Successfully completed the Graduation Writing Requirement
  • Filed a formal study plan
  • Maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA for all coursework completed on the formal study plan
  • At least 18 units must be completed after advancement to candidacy
