Welcome to the Kinesiology Department website. We offer Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Kinesiology. We are proud of our programs and have developed an excellent reputation throughout the state and region. Our students experience hands-on learning in some of the best laboratory facilities in the nation and the faculty are leaders in their areas of expertise. Our graduates are highly recruited and job placement is excellent.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology is a broad based program offering students curricular choices for a wide range of career opportunities. Concentrations include Teaching and Exercise Science and Health Promotion. Students also have the option of choosing an individualized course of study.
The Exercise Science and Health Promotion concentration incorporates the scientific and clinical knowledge of exercise, health education and nutrition as applied in preventive, clinical and commercial health promotion settings. Graduates work in a wide range of enterprises that include worksite health promotion, clinical exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, commercial and corporate fitness, and public, private and non-profit health agencies. The concentration provides three tracks that will prepare students to take external national certification examinations. These tracks include Clinical Exercise Science, Worksite Commercial Health and Fitness, and Health Education Specialist. Students interested in health care professions select the Clinical Exercise Science track.
The Teaching Concentration prepares students to meet subject matter competency required for application to the Single Subject Credential program in physical education. In the Individualized Course of Study students may choose coursework related to a specific career goal in the areas of occupational therapy, nursing, or physician's assistant.
There are a variety career opportunities relating to the Kinesiology major. Some of the directions our graduates have taken include but are not limited to:
Teaching Physical Education; Health Club Administration; Health Fitness Rehabilitation; Personal Training; Chiropractic Medicine; Occupational Therapy; Physical Therapy; Physician Assistant; Nursing; Medicine; Naturopathic Medicine; Health Educator; Osteopathic Medicine; Exercise Physiologist.
The Master of Science degree offers two areas of emphasis and an individualized course of study. The Exercise Science and Health Promotion emphasis is an extension of the undergraduate concentration. It prepares students to work in the health promotion field in a variety of settings, including corporate, club, private and governmental agencies. It also qualifies graduates to pursue clinically oriented positions in preventative and rehabilitative health programs.
The Physical Education and Sport Studies emphasis offers students advanced preparation for elementary, secondary, or college positions in physical education and coaching. The Individualized Course of Study allows students to develop programs of study that meet their projected career goals.
Our faculty actively include students in their various research endeavors. Faculty and student research assistants have published in professional journals and have presented research findings at state, regional, national and international conferences.
