How to Apply

NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS:

We are currently working to evaluate and improve our program. During this time, the M.S. in Kinesiology degree program will not be accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Please check back in the future for further updates.

 

When and How to Apply to the M.S. Program in Kinesiology

Applications to the Master of Science Degree Program in Kinesiology are accepted for Fall Quarter admission only. To ensure adequate processing and full consideration, all application materials should be filed with the Cal Poly Admission's Office by March 1st. Apply online at CSU Mentor.

Transcripts  

Once you have submitted your application:

1. Request your official transcripts from all schools you have attended since secondary school, showing all coursework and any certificates or degrees received, to be mailed directly from the institution to: Cal Poly Admissions Office, 1 Grand Avenue, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407. -AND-

2. Submit a second set of transcripts (unofficial are okay) to Interfolio: http://grad.calpoly.edu/programs/masters_programs.html (Scroll down the page until you find the Interfolio link for the Kinesiology program)

GRE Scores

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) test scores are required for admission to the graduate program in Kinesiology. Submit GRE scores, taken within the last 5 years, electronically to California Polytechnic State University Institution Code: 4038. For further information visit the Cal Poly Testing Serivces Website and/or the GRE Website. You must also report your GRE scores on the application through CSU Mentor.

Letters of Recommendation

Send three (3) letters of recommendation for admission to the Master of Science Degree Program in Kinesiology by March 15th. Letters of recommendation should be submitted through Interfolio at: http://grad.calpoly.edu/program/masters_programs.html (Scroll down the page until you find the Interfolio link for the Kinesiology program)

Personal Statement

The statement of purpose on the CSU Mentor application cannot be used in lieu of the personal statement requirement.  The personal statement is limited to four typed, double-spaced pages. A current resume/CV should also be included in addition to your personal statement.  Upload your personal statement and resume to the Interfolio link at: http://grad.calpoly.edu/programs/masters_programs.html (Scroll down the page until you find the Interfolio link for the Kinesiology program)

Include your name, date and page numbers in the header on your paper.

In your personal statement please write an essay that addresses the following:

  • Section 1:  explain your interest in the field of Kinesiology and why you have decided to pursue an advanced degree in Kinesiology at this time.  Describe your career goals and how the M.S. Degree will further your professional preparation and help you achieve your goals.  Please indicate if you intend to pursue the Thesis option or Non-Thesis Option for the culminating experience requirement, or why you may be undecided about which option to pursue.
  • Section 2:  provide information about your educational background (describe your strengths and weaknesses in relation to your educational pursuits), past internship or work experiences, and your physical activity, exercise and/or sport history.
  • Section 3: describe what area(s) of research are you interested in learning more about or possibly pursuing as part of a student-faculty research collaboration or as an applied project or potentially as Thesis research.
  • Section 4: to conclude please explain why you believe the program at Cal Poly, SLO is a good match for you to pursue your graduate studies and the M.S. Degree in Kinesiology.
